Apple Pie With A Crumb Topping

Apple Pie With A Crumb Topping

Fall May 26, 2025

Pie Crust

  • 1 pie crust for the bottom of the pie plate. Store bought is fine or if you have some extra time, I have a great pie crust recipe.

Apple Filling

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • a few sprinkles of all purpose flour, about 2-3 tablespoons.
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 1-2 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • about 7-8 small to medium apples, peeled and chopped. Granny Smith is the best for pie but I've used other apples before and it'll still turn out delicious.
  • a squeeze or 2 of lemon juice

Crumb Topping

  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, I prefer dark but light will work too.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 stick of slightly softened butter cut up into slices or cubes.

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Place the pie crust into the pie dish. Using your fingers or a fork, crimp the edges.
  3. Grab a large bowl and mix the apples, sugar, cinnamon, cornstarch, flour, nutmeg and the lemon juice all together. Pour the apples into the pie crust.
  4. For the crumb topping...grab another bowl and combine all of the topping ingredients. I usually will use my hands to combine. It should look like a thick crumbly mixture when it is done. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples.
  5. Grab a sheet of aluminum foil and place over the pie. Put into the oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes.
  6. Next, turn the temperature down to 375 degrees and remove the foil. Keep the foil handy just in case you might need it again later. Bake the pie for another half hour.
  7. It is done when the top is a golden brown and the filling is bubbling. If the top is browning too fast, place the foil on top again.
  8. Once it is done, pull it out and let it cool.
  9. Once it isn't scalding hot, slice it up and serve. I am definitely suggesting you eat it with a little ice cream or some heavy cream poured on top. YUM.
