Layer Cookies (Magic Bars)
These cookie bars have many names! Magic Bars, Hello Dollies, 7 Layer Cookies are just a few examples. Maybe there are a couple more. My family and I always just called them layer cookies because of the layered look of the final product. This is also one of those recipes where you can play around the ingredients and the amount of them. Like if you aren't obsessed with coconut, use a little less. If you are an absolute chocolate lover, add a little more chocolate. You can even add some butterscotch chips or peanut butter chips if you are wanting something a little different. Have fun with it!
- 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
- 1 stick of unsalted butter (1/2 cup)
- 1 (14 oz.) can of sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (I usually use pecans but walnuts are good too.)
- 1 cup shredded coconut (sweetened or unsweetened is fine.)
- Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Melt the stick of butter then pour into a 13 x 9 pan. Take the pan and move it around so the butter spreads all over. Try and have the butter go up the sides too.
- Then sprinkle the graham cracker crumbs all over to cover the butter. Once the crumbs are in the pan, I'll take my hands and lightly pat down so the butter and crumbs absorb.
- Pour the entire can of condensed milk all over the crumbs.
- For the next layer, grab a bowl and mix the coconut, chocolate chips and nuts all together. Then sprinkle over the milk. Same as before, once the toppings are sprinkled all over, I'll pat down with my hands just to make sure everything is sticking together.
- Put the pan into the oven and bake for about 25 minutes. Once the top is brown and bubbly, it is done. Pull out and cool for 10-15 minutes before cutting.
- These taste heavenly warm from the oven but I also think these get better the longer they sit out and get to a nice room temperature.
